About Us

Stephen Woollard is passionate about engaging people with the natural world and has 35 years experience in conservation and environmental education. He was inspired by Gerald Durrell and began working as a zoo educator in 1987. Stephen has worked at Twycross Zoo (1987-1988 & 2015-16), Bristol Zoo (1989-2003), Dudley Zoo (2003-2005) and RZSS Edinburgh Zoo & Highland Wildlife Park (2005-2015).

Throughout his career, Stephen has: developed and delivered innovative education programmes for all age and ability groups; designed and created interpretation – signage, interactives and programmes; run workshops and communication training sessions in the UK and abroad; organised conferences; lectured up to MSc level; managed teams of staff and volunteers; worked with external partners and funders and developed strategy and policy documents.

Stephen has also travelled the world. He was involved in an education & veterinary project in Zimbabwe, led a safari in Kenya & Tanzania, as well as being a speaker at international conferences from Moscow to Adelaide and Hong Kong to Budapest.

Stephen is Vice President of the UK & Irish zookeepers association, ABWAK (RATEL journal editor 2005-2017), and was Exec Board member and editor of the International Zoo Educators association, IZE (2012-2017).  He was also a UK government advisor as ‘education expert’ member of the Zoos Forum/Zoos Expert Committee (defra 2005-2015).

Stephen is also a Director Trustee of the Dudley & West Midlands Zoological Society, and Chair of the Ethics Committee; and is Chair of the Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust, Scotland.
